About the Government Benefits Comparison Tool

This website is a tool for state and local government leaders, academics, research institutions, and the general public to search data collected from city/county governments on their retiree health care and pension plans. You can search two categories of data:

City/County Government Retiree Health Care Data

This data was collected by the Center for State and Local Government Excellence, the International City/County Management Association , and the faculty of North Carolina State University in 2007 and 2008 from more than 2000 city and county governments. The data was collected as part of a larger effort to understand how state and local governments design and manage their retiree health care benefits, as well as the impact of new Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) financial reporting requirements. For more information on the data that was collected, please read the survey that was sent out to city and county governments.

City/County Government Pension Data

The GFOA Financial Indicators database consists of a collection of financial statistics collected from organizations throughout the United States. Specifically, the data are drawn from the comprehensive annual financial reports (CAFRs) of public sector organizations that received GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for their 2006 fiscal year CAFR. The data is useful for financial benchmarking as over 60 data financial variables are provided in the database. The full database can be purchased at www.gfoa.org.
